There are now over eight live sportsbooks in Indiana for bettors to wager on. These are all available online and mobile across the state. Sports betting has really taken off for Indiana, and there are more operators keen to get involved. We are expecting to see new books officially launch from betting powerhouse like 888sport and possibly bet365. Since its launch in 2019, Indiana sports gambling has grown from strength to strength.

The William Hill sportsbook is the latest sportsbook to join the legal sports betting scene in Indiana, going live on Oct 28, 2020. Big things are expected from this industry giant and first impressions certainly look good.

Just for the record, Governor Eric Holcomb bet $10 on the Indianapolis Colts to win the Super Bowl; $10 on the Indiana Pacers to win the NBA Championship; and $10 on the Indiana Fever to win its Sunday night game. Gambling in Indiana has always been popular and since this first legal bet was placed, it has only grown in popularity.

The legislature did something rare. We’re progressing with this gaming bill and bringing another amenity to not only Shelbyville but also the state of Indiana, with sports wagering,” said Rep. Sean Eberhart said after the ribbon-cutting ceremony, before adding: “And it helps us bring a little bit of competition with other neighboring states. Hoosiers can now bet with confidence.”

Indiana sports betting – Look at the timeline

It was Gov. Holcomb who signed a bill into law on May 8, 2019, making Indiana the tenth U.S. state to legalize sports betting following the Supreme Court’s repeal of PASPA in May 2018, having deemed the 1992 law to be unconstitutional. This date was a very important one in the history of legal Indiana gambling and started the ball rolling for a range of reputable Hoosier bookies to be available online.

That paved the way for the 13 state-regulated casinos to apply for licenses to open retail sportsbooks, and 11 of these, along with all three of its off-track betting parlors, have since received temporary sports betting licenses from the Indiana Gaming Commission (IGC). Given the expansion and growth predicted, all are expected to open sportsbooks eventually.

The following eight locations opened sportsbooks in September 2019:

  • Indiana Grand Casino in Shelbyville
  • Ameristar Casino in East Chicago
  • Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg
  • Winner’s Circle in Downtown Indianapolis
  • Horseshoe Hammond Casino
  • Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City
  • French Lick Casino in French Lick
  • Belterra Casino in Florence

The Hollywood casino Indiana has our pick of physical sportsbooks in the state. Featuring over 20 TVs for viewing all the best games, they show every pro football game every Sunday. The Sportsbook has 16 kiosks, and although it is always busy, it is never an issue getting your wager down. Sit back with a beer and wait for the action to start. Our only issue is it closes at 7 pm in the week, but it is open till 10 pm on weekends.

Hollywood casino sportsbook continues to draw in punters, but if you cant’ get to the casino, you can always bet on your mobile from one of the state’s legal sportsbook apps.

The other six locations with temporary licenses are as follows:

  • Horseshoe Southern in Elizabeth
  • Harrah’s Hoosier Park in Anderson
  • Rising Star Casino in Rising Star
  • Tropicana Evansville casino
  • Winner’s Circle locations in New Haven and Clarksville

Indiana sports betting partnerships

By allowing authorized casinos to partner up with existing Sportsbook operators, Indiana has followed a similar line to most other states where sports betting has been legalized.

This is a significant advantage for the casinos as they do not have to build Sportsbooks from scratch, while the operators get to grow their brands and revenue further. It’s a win-win situation. One of the most recent operators to launch is BetMGM Indiana. They are partnered with the Belterra Casino Resort in Florence. The Indiana Gaming Commission (IGC) granted authorization for BetMGM to go live on February 25, 2020, and they have been a big draw ever since.

The list of operators in Indiana (also referred to as Hoosier bookies) includes such familiar names as FanDuel and DraftKings, both of whom are already live in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and West Virginia. They could be soon joined by the following operators, all of whom are stepping up activities in the hope of having a presence in the state:

  • FOX Bet
  • bet365
  • 888
  • Barstool Sports

Since sports betting was launched in Indian, a few sportsbooks have stood out as clear winners in drawing in punters. BetRivers Indiana is one of the sportsbooks that has gained the most attention. Offering up a fantastic betting platform and online, they are one of the most successful sportsbooks in the state. They were the first Sportsbook to launch in the state through its partnership with French Lick Resort.

Who can bet legally in Indiana?

Like most of the US, the gambling age in Indiana is 21 and above. Anyone aged 21 or older can legally bet in the state. You also need to be physically situated within state borders. That includes visitors too, and like what is already happening in New Jersey & Pennsylvania, where players from neighboring states can cross into Indiana to place bets. Operators are using geofencing software – combining IP, Cellular, and WiFi data – to administer this essential requirement of their licenses. The use of VPNs is not permitted. As long as you are physically inside the state, you can place your bet anywhere. You can read more about Geolocation and any issues on our sportsbook geolocation guide.

So grab a beer, get your bets on, turn on ESPN, sit back, and watch the action unfold.

Which sports can I bet on?

It’s easier to list what you can’t bet on as it’s a short one:

  • eSports
  • Any sports that have participants younger than 18

So the full list is an exhaustive one and includes many niche sports such as cricket, which is hugely popular as a betting medium outside the US:

  • Auto Racing
  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Bowling
  • Boxing
  • Cricket
  • Darts
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Hockey

  • Lacrosse
  • Mixed Martial Arts
  • Olympics
  • Rugby
  • Sailing
  • Soccer
  • Softball
  • Tennis
  • Track and Field

Which Indiana sports teams can I bet on?

The state is fortunate enough to represent at the highest level in both professional football and basketball, while college and women’s teams are well represented too:

  • Indiana Pacers (NBA)
  • Indiana Fever (WNBA)
  • Indianapolis Colts (NFL)
  • Indiana University (NCAA)
  • Notre Dame University (NCAA)
  • Butler (NCAA)
  • Purdue University (NCAA)

As you can see, there is an excellent range of Indiana sports teams that you can wager on from in the state. Bet on sport live from anywhere across the state with a handy mobile betting app and never miss getting that wager on again.

Person-to-person sports betting in Indiana

Now legal in all 14 casinos and racinos currently operating in the Hoosier State with temporary licenses. Bettors can walk in and place their bets at the sportsbook kiosk, providing they first register and provide the last four digits of their social security number. In essence, this is to confirm age and protect minors.

Online and mobile sports betting in Indiana

Unlike Iowa, where players have to first register in person at a brick-and-mortar casino, at least through to the end of 2020, Hoosiers can register with sportsbooks directly via a website browser or an app. You can see all the best Indiana Sportsbook apps on our dedicated review pages. If you are into betting on football, you can see our pick of the best football betting app available in the state.

That didn’t happen straight away in the Hoosier State as retail is far easier to roll out into existing properties. Still, most operators, if not all of them, will launch mobile betting after first opening in retail locations. Like most sports betting companies around the globe, new players are able to claim a free bet with IN Sportsbooks.

Hoosiers who want to bet online will have to provide some personal information, which may include:

  • Your legal name
  • Your birth date
  • Last four digits of your social security number
  • Your residential address
  • Your email address
  • Your cell number
  • Your debit or credit card number

Once registered and having funded their account by depositing, bettors can place bets on all the sports previously mentioned. IN Sportsbook offer a range of convenient banking options. Some of the most popular betting markets in the state are sure to be:

  • Teasers
  • Round Robins
  • Props
  • Futures

Live, in-play, or in-game wagering is also available at all the new sportsbooks and, if other states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania where it’s already live are good examples, it could prove to be the most popular form of wagering.

Online casino and poker in Indiana

Still only available with offshore-books operating illegally. Indiana’s 2019 gambling bill legalized online sports betting only, unfortunately. We are hoping one-day online casino activity will be legalized, and we can start to see and play at some Indiana live casinos. Players looking for the best online casino will need to travel to a state where online casino is legal such as New Jersy or Pennsylvania.

Fantasy Sports

Indiana has always been at the forefront when it comes to gambling and online activities. Back in 2016, Indiana became the second state with a law formally legalizing daily fantasy sports. Governor Mike Pence signed Senate Bill 339, which was music to DFS player’s ears. Since then, the top two DFS providers (FanDuel and DraftKings) have jumped into the sports betting area and produced two of the most popular sportsbooks online.

Following a meeting of the IGC in late August, DraftKings, FanDuel, and FantasyDraft have all had their permits extended for at least a further 12 months. All three operators have been licensed in the state since June 2017.

A windfall for Indiana?

Sports wagering revenue has fallen short of expectations in some states that have legalized it since the repeal of PASPA. Still, they all launched without mobile betting, and New Jersey, where it is permitted statewide, has seen a staggering growth in revenue. However, Indiana sports betting revenue has grown month on month and shows just how popular betting in the state is.

With Indiana following the same path as NJ and operators clamoring to open mobile sportsbooks, the future looks bright. While regulators set a fairly modest tax rate of 9.5% – it’s as high as 36% in PA – on adjusted gross revenue, with a portion of that going to problem gambling, this will go to the General Fund.

Furthermore, the state’s casinos need additional gambling revenue. They have seen a massive drop in recent years due to competition from newer properties in Cincinnati and southern Michigan. Given the state’s proximity to several large cities, sports wagering is now available to more potential bettors, who are the real winners in this.

All of the Sportsbooks and operators you will find on our site are 100% legal and safe to use in Indiana. They are all regulated by the Indiana Gaming Commission and, as such, licensed to carry out Sportsbook and betting activities within the state. As they are legal, you can use your debit & credit cards, fund your IN sportsbook with PayPal, and make electronic banking transfers in complete safety.

Currently, the law only allows Sports betting online; there is no legal online Casino or Poker. Hopefully, with the introduction of legal wagering in the state, this may change in the future. Indiana sports betting is taking off, so why not grab yourself a piece of the action. There is no excuse now not to get your bet on for the Super Bowl.

All the operators featured on Gamble Indiana are licensed by the Indiana Gaming Commission and legally allowed to offer online and mobile betting.

There are now some top Indiana Sportsbook apps available to bettors in the Hoosier State. We compare and rate the best apps from IGC licensed operators.

Since sports betting was legalized in the state, a wave of online sportsbooks have launched mobile betting apps. Allowing players to place bets anywhere across Indiana. Get ready to bet on your mobile with our pick of the top-rated mobile sportsbooks that are legal in Indiana.

You don’t need to be a resident of Indiana, as long as you are located within state borders, you can download any of the sportsbook apps below, sign up and start to bet. Make sure you allow location setting on your mobile so the sportsbook geolocation software can confirm you are within state borders.

Like DraftKings, FanDuel sportsbook benefits from name recognition and an already massive database of fantasy sports customers in the Hoosier State, who can link their DFS and Sportsbook accounts. Caesars Sportsbook

Partnered with Horseshoe Hammond on Lake Michigan, just a stone’s throw from Illinois, and one of the bigger players in the competitive NJ sports betting market.

They’ve owned one of the best casinos on the Las Vegas strip for many years and since spreading their wings into the burgeoning sports betting market, they’ve soared. Their NJ app has been getting rave reviews, including from us, and what they’ve rolled out in Indiana is just as good. But don’t just take our word for it.

The Caesars Sportsbook app for Android and iPhone launched in May 2020 and has quickly become a fan favorite. Great looking sports betting app with a wide range of sports to wager on. Backed up by a brand and name you can trust.

BetMGM Sports

Probably our favorite operator at the minute. Top lines and odds with a ridiculously easy to use design. We love the MGM brand and they have incorporated this perfectly into their BETMGM mobile app. Available for Android and the iPhone, you can bet on all the top sports. There is a great range of markets and the in-game betting is dazzling. We sometimes use the app just to check NFL scores as it is that quick to update.

William Hill

This UK-based operator has forged a partnership with Tropicana Eastville for its retail Sportsbook and already supports an app in the New Jersey Sportsbook market.

Having invested heavily in Nevada, where they have 100+ Sportsbooks in operation, they know a thing or two about what US bettors want in an app. And their platform is certainly one of the best in terms of speed. This is mainly down to its slimmed-down design, and ease of navigation. Granted their welcome bonus is less generous than some of their competitors but we still wouldn’t put any IN bettor off from downloading their app.

New Indiana Sportsbooks

Other online Sportsbooks we hope to see open to Hoosiers include bet365, Fox Bet, and 888. We have put together this guide to help you through the process of choosing a suitable Sportsbook app, beginning with what we consider to be some essential criteria.

Betting guide

  1. We love the convenience of betting via an app and an easy download process, which is hassle-free and doesn’t eat up too much of your data is essential.
  2. A mobile-friendly interface that allows for easy navigation is another biggie that earns Sportsbook apps top marks from us. Finding the market you want and getting your bet on quickly should be a painless process.
  3. Something more than standard when it comes to betting markets is always appreciated as to why restrict yourself to straight bets? A good selection of teasers and props, for example, makes betting so much more fun and ultimately helps us stay in the black profits-wise.
  4. Value matters in that respect too and anyone serious about making money should be shopping around for the best lines as a rule. Taking advantage of those ‘nickel lines’, when a book moves to a lower price (from -110 to -105, for example), can give the more savvy bettor the edge in the short and long term.
  5. Players should be capitalizing on any available sign-up bonuses, which can either be in the form of cash, free play, or a first deposit bonus. As any bonus can only be claimed once, it’s important to find a suitable one based on your wagering style and then maximize it.
  6. Being able to fund your account through a variety of means and know your funds are being safely held can’t be underestimated, as is the ability to cash out quickly. We all need to bet with confidence and that is where the new breed of regulated Sportsbooks score highly over the less legit offshore books. There are now several sportsbooks in Indiana using PayPal which make it easy to sign up and deposit.
  7. More bets than ever are now being placed live or In-Play / In-Game, once the action has got underway, and it allows us to either add on to our original position or hedge out of it by backing the other side. For that reason, a fast-moving data feed with minimal delays is a requisite.
  8. Reliable customer service 24/7 and through a variety of communication channels – email, live chat, and even Twitter these days – is reassuring to have when we need it.

Fortunately for Indiana bettors, there are now plenty of online and mobile sportsbooks to choose from, and the ones we are going to mention here all have quality mobile gambling apps to recommend them. Most of the IN sportsbooks offer a free welcome bet or bonus too so you can get off to a good start with the book.

It’s not easy to choose the best sports betting app if you are new to betting, that is why we put together this handy guide for you. We have tested and reviewed all the sportsbooks and ranked them on their ease of use, markets, lines & odds, how user friendly they are, and promotions available. There are some amazing features built into sportsbook apps, like Cash Out, streaming, In-Play betting, and more.

More are surely on the way as under Indiana law; each licensee can partner with third-party service providers to operate up to three online sportsbooks or “skins”. That can only be good news for Hoosiers as more competition among operators will lead to more favorable odds, offers, and promotions for bettors – watch this space for more exciting Indiana Sportsbooks.
